How to make a word search

  1. Choose 8 to 20 words around one theme: this week's spelling list, science vocabulary, party guests' names. Or open a ready-made template.
  2. Pick the difficulty. Easy hides words only across and down. Medium adds diagonals. Hard allows all eight directions and fills the gaps with letters from your own words, so decoy fragments appear everywhere.
  3. Set the grid size to fit your longest word with room to spare. Grids around 1.3 times your longest word pack in neatly.
  4. Press New layout until you like the look, then print. The answer key goes on page two.

Why word searches help with spelling

To spot a word, you hold its exact letter sequence in mind and scan for it, which rehearses the spelling over and over. That is why many teachers pair a weekly spelling list with a word search: it is repetition that does not feel like drill. Lowercase grids suit children who are still learning capital letters.

Is this word search maker really free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many puzzles you make or print. The puzzle is generated in your browser.

How do I make a word search printable as a PDF?

Press "Print / Save PDF" and choose "Save as PDF" as the printer. The puzzle prints on page one and the answer key on page two; untick "Print answer key" to leave it out.

Why was one of my words left out?

A word is skipped when it is longer than the grid or there is no room left for it. Make the grid bigger, remove a few words, or press "New layout" to try a different arrangement.

What grid size should I use for kids?

For ages 5 to 7, a 10×10 grid with 6 to 8 words running only across and down works well. Ages 8 to 11 cope with 13×13 and diagonals; adults enjoy 15×15 or larger with backwards words.

Can students solve it on a screen instead of paper?

Yes. Copy the share link and send it; it opens the same puzzle. The link holds your words and settings, so nothing is stored on a server.

Can I use words with spaces, like "ice cream"?

Yes. Spaces, hyphens and apostrophes are removed in the grid (ICECREAM), while the word list shows your original spelling.
